The Fergusons of Strachur are said to descend from Fergus of Kilkerran, who was granted lands by King Robert I. Sir John Ferguson of Kilkerran, born in 1708, was made a Baronet. In 1708, the Fergusons of Atholl were granted charters to their lands, acquired from Balliol and King Robert Bruce. During the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the Atholl Fergusons supported Prince Charlie.
